Sofia is for dreamers

If you haven't been here yet - grab your bags, right now! We both grew up in Sofia, Bulgaria and enjoyed its cosmopolitan atmosphere.. It’s beautiful, of course, but what's really worth it is the unique location - just next to the great Vitosha mountain! And also… ok, here’s a list of the 10 things we most like about living in Sofia:

 1.      Vitosha and its green hills in the summer…

It's really a place for dreamers <3

2.     Having fun with your friends in the park! You can do some longboarding, drink some beer on a bench – enjoy the night atmosphere outside of the fancy bars… Just literally spend the night out! There’s no other place we’ve been in Europe where people spend so much time in the parks, drinking beers in bottles, sharing stories for their recent adventures, or just having fun with their kids, bicycles, skates etc, or relaxing after their work day, enjoying the art of the street musicians...

3.     Go skiing in the morning…. BEFORE work. Yes! Vitosha is so close that you can go for a short ride in the morning, or just after your work day…Speaking about skiing, Sofia is just 1-2 hours away from the coolest mountains in Bulgaria; Sometimes Niki gets too enthusiastic about that...

4.     There are also few climbing spots nearby the capital, but you better take a 1 hour ride to some of the craziest places for rock climbing in Europe such as Rila’s bolder heaven or Prohodna – where you can see “The eyes of God"...

5. Finally Black Sea is also just around the corner (when there is a forecast for surfing Niki gets us there for less than 3 hours  )

6.     Anyway, even if you’re not such a nature lover, the crazy atmosphere and rich culture of the Bulgarian capital will definitely conquer your hart! For example you can go watch a nice independent production in our all time favorite cinema “Dom na kinoto”, or in the recently renovated “Odeon” cinema. If you enjoy independent movies, there’s a great festival in the fall (Sofia Independent) and also few great events in the summer. The atmosphere is always great and they often propose some free showings ;) Or you can visit some of the small galleries and buy some paintings,  hand made jewels or second hand vintage clothes. Some nice concerts take part rather often and we both love going to the theater... Of course it's obvious to most of Sofia's citizens (and not only!) that here you can find a lot of potential about arts and everything, but in Bulgaria it's really hard to make a living out of it ...

7.     The vintage charm of the capital is all around, just take a walk… We took some cool shots with an old ZENITH camera, when we look at them, we can almost feel the freeze of Sofia’s winter afternoons and the smell of roast chestnuts…

8.     Eating! So many things to eat – from the cheapest Bulgarian, Turkish and Greek meals, to the more expensive alternatives. Since we’re vegetarians and we definitely don’t enjoy junk food we prefer going to Shishman Street for a fast meal such as great sandwiches and soups in Soupa Star and Farmers, or some Bulgarian banitza from the bakery just in front the legendary 7mo school. We also love Sun Moon vegetarian restaurants, and for bit more special occasions – Italian kitchen in Spaghetti Kitchen and La Bottega. For the lazy afternoon you can have a tea in Veda House or enjoy homemade lemonade in Memento, One more or even the library shop on Vitosha street, while reading books on Bulgarian, English, French or Spanish :)

9.     Beauty is all around… And the capital is full of nice looking young people – especially the ladies! Every time we go back from a trip we’re both stunned to see how many hot girls you can meet just on your way home from the airport …

...and NO, we can not post photos about that :D

10.     Nightlife – well just come and see. We always enjoyed having friends around and spending crazy moments together… So there are lots of decent bars in Sofia, and we both find there’s something awesome about how many places you can check out before the sunlight starts coloring the sky and it’s definitely time for a long sleep after a great night.
